The Drifters were set to record

'Under The Boardwalk' on May 21, 1964.

But the bands lead singer, Rudy Lewis, died the night before from a suspected drug overdose.

They took a vote and decided to go ahead with the recording, even though they were devastated by Lewis' death. Johnny Moore took the lead.

The Recording rose quickly to number one on the charts...and is widely recognized as one of the greatest songs of all time.

If you listen closely, you can hear the sorrow in their voices.
