One thing that is clear to me is that the "powers that be" bit more than they were able to chew.

We are now in a weird state where the Rubicon was crossed, but Rome was never reached. They are now trying to dial things back, but are unable to do so as everyone has gone insane. Half of the population unquestionably accepts the narrative and the other half reject it entirely and are sharpening the guillotines. Interesting times.
